The University of Mary Washington hired Richard Wilson as its new men's and women's varsity rowing head coach.
Wilson spent the past two years as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Delaware, where he coached novices and walk-ons for the women's varsity program. He was head coach at Niagara University in 2003-05.
Wilson was a three-time champion of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and co-created a rowing club at Niagara University for men and women.
BASKETBALL
Brooke Point High School graduate Chay Shegog had six points and eight rebounds in the U.S.' 88-53 victory over China Friday in the U19 World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
The U.S. (1-1) needed to beat Mali yesterday to advance to the second round.
BASEBALL
Spotsylvania High School graduate Cody Wheeler struck out 10 in seven innings as the U.S. College National Team beat Team British Columbia 12-2 Thursday in the World Baseball Challenge.
Wheeler, a rising junior at Coastal Carolina University, is 3-0 for the U.S. team this summer. The World Baseball Challenge final will be held today in Prince George, B.C.
