Irene Egan will put education first

I have seen several letters the past few weeks praising the character of Paul Milde, who currently represents the Aquia District on the Stafford Board of Supervisors ["Paul Milde has an abundance of integrity," July 17].

I wanted to take a moment and recognize the achievements of his opponent in the coming election, Irene Egan.

I served as president of the Stafford Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association. I got to know Irene Egan when she organized the Save Our Stafford Schools effort to coordinate educators, parents, and county residents about the impact of a plan that could have resulted in the closure of several elementary and middle schools, including Stafford Elementary School.

Advocates of the plan tried to sell it as "consolidating classrooms," but Irene said it better when she said it would "consolidate our kids."

The plan would have put our kids in an environment less conducive to learning and put greater strain on our teachers and resources.

Thanks in no small part to Irene's leadership, we succeeded, and all of our schools will be open for learning this coming fall.

Of the three candidates running in the Aquia District, only Irene Egan is truly independent, and only Irene Egan will fight to make sure that our kids' education is at the top of the county's priority list.

With all the partisan bickering on the Board of Supervisors that I have witnessed on this issue, I think we will do better with Irene Egan than with Paul the Republican or Paul the Democrat.

We need an independent voice, and that voice belongs to Irene Egan.
