Civil War re-enactors were ready for the meeting!
When notice was received that the July 27 public hearing would not be held in Orange County, living-historians from New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and all over Virginia were already en route. We did not know of the cancellation until we arrived in Orange. Some had traveled as much as eight hours and for some distance, all to protest Wal-Mart's building on sacred ground when other nearby properties are available. We had Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. John Buford representing both sides of the conflict, as well as many other personas, all in period clothing. It was an impressive sight, especially when they played taps! The Civil War Preservation Trust has saved a number of other critical properties in Virginia, so I hope they can save this one as well. Lynn Tuckwiller Lewisburg, W.Va.
