Suspected shoplifters leave merchandise--and little brother--behind Date published: 8/11/2009
BY KEITH EPPS Police say two siblings left something important behind when they fled the scene of a crime Sunday--their little brother. The 6-year-old boy was eventually turned over to his parents and his adult siblings went to jail, Stafford Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said. According to Kennedy, the incident occurred about 1:27 p.m. at the Giant on Celebrate Virginia Parkway. An employee saw a woman filling a shopping cart with diapers. She then left the store without paying, accompanied by a man and the little boy, who was in the cart. The employee confronted the group in the parking lot and asked to see a receipt. The woman told the employee that she thought her sister had paid for the diapers. Kennedy said the woman and man, who turned out to be her brother, ran to a car and left the shopping center. The employee took the child, who was still in the cart, back into the store along with the diapers. About 10 minutes later, the man returned to the store, Kennedy said. He was cursing and demanded to get the child back. He was taken to the manager's office, where the child was, and told that the Sheriff's Office had been called, Kennedy said. He was no longer in the office when Deputy Jennifer Casares arrived, but he and the child were apprehended a few minutes later trying to leave through another exit, police said. Larry Dawson, 19, of Remington was charged with child neglect and driving on a suspended license. His sister, 26-year-old Deanna Dawson of Remington, was charged with felony child neglect, felony shoplifting, driving on a suspended license and possession of marijuana. Kennedy said police found the marijuana after they picked the woman up on Rocky Run Road, where she had apparently been dropped off a short time earlier by her brother. Keith Epps: 540/374-5404
