Shelter dogs and inmates a good match
Shelter dogs and inmates a good match
Date published: 8/26/2009

After reading the article titled "Culpeper prison inmates helping train dogs" [Aug. 10], we felt compelled to praise the efforts of the Orange County Humane Society for implementing this new program.

Shelter and rescue dogs have always been our family's first choice when adopting a new pet, and we have been blessed with endless canine love and companionship as a result.

We were first introduced to a similar program last September while searching for a new dog to join our family.

We adopted a delightful border collie-Irish setter mix, a "graduate" of an eight-week inmate training program sponsored by the Muhlenberg County Humane Society in Greenville, Ky.

She came to us obedience trained, and "Canine Good Citizen Certified" from her participation in their program.

What a rewarding way to help our abandoned and abused animals find a forever home and, in turn, allow inmates to experience something positive in their daily lives.

We wish them success as they journey through this new program. We know from experience, it can be rewarding for all concerned.

I think these types of programs are win-win for all involved.
