We are writing in response to the recent article that reported which area schools made AYP ["More area schools meeting testing goals," Aug. 14].
We are parents of children who attend Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School in Stafford County. Unfortunately, our school did not make AYP. We have been given the option to transfer our children to another county school. We will not transfer our children to a different school. Two of our children will be fifth-graders, and one will be a second-grader. The Dean family has a 4-year-old who is excited to begin kindergarten at Barrett in 2010. The Conleys live outside of Barrett's boundaries and have voluntarily transferred their children to Barrett Elementary for five years. We believe in Barrett Elementary and want our children to continue their education at the best school in Stafford County. We understand that test scores need to be reported for statistical reasons, but Barrett Elementary is so much more than test scores. The principals, teachers, and staff at Barrett are outstanding. Yes, the teachers teach our children academics, but they go the extra mile to ensure that our children become positive, honest, and respectful citizens. When you walk into Barrett Elementary, it is evident that our children come first. Children are recognized by name. Staff members greet you with a smile. Teachers are enthusiastic about teaching and willing to support you in any way. Barrett Elementary is not just our children's school. It is part of our families--and we don't walk out on family! Heidi Dean and Deborah Conley Stafford
