How do you launch a new business in today's economic climate?

And what help is available once you're up and running?

Brian Baker, executive director of the Rappahannock Region Small Business Development Center, and Mary Parnell, the center's senior business consultant, have answers.

They'll be fielding questions and offering advice for owners of both new and established businesses from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday during our ninth monthly Money Talk$ Web chat.

The RRSBDC assists the small-business community through management training, industrial and demographic research, and one-on-one counseling with a focus on capital access and management planning. One of its regular seminars is First Steps to Starting a Business, which covers such topics as business potential, ownership characteristics and marketing.

Over the past five years, the center has assisted area businesses with creating more than 1,900 jobs, achieve sales growth of more than $35 million, and securing financing in excess of $30 million.

Baker has headed the RRSBDC since May 2002. He previously owned and operated Vecon Substrate Systems, a Fredericksburg company that provided commercial fleet and industrial services to transportation companies.

He has a bachelor's degree in economics and an M.B.A. from the University of Mary Washington.

Parnell, who has worked at the RRSBDC since 2003, provides counseling to area business owners as well as entrepreneurial training to start-up and existing businesses. She also instructs Business Plan Development classes.

To participate in Money Talk$, either submit questions in advance by e-mail to bfreehling@freelancestar .com or log on to fredericks burg.com during the chat. Questions and answers will be archived on fredericks burg.com, and a transcript will appear Thursday in The Free Lance-Star's Business section.

Future "Money Talk$" topics will include Social Security, health care and saving for college. Feel free to send us ideas for other topics.
