Local woman starting social networking site Date published: 9/1/2009
BY BILL FREEHLING
A Spotsylvania County woman is starting an online networking site to help people manage their groups, clubs or associations. Lisa K. Pecunia, who lives in the Fox Point neighborhood with her husband, is in the early stages of launching Grouvia.com. She decribes herself as the company's "chief everything officer." The idea behind Grouvia is to help organizers manage their groups by scheduling events, sharing photos, publishing newsletters and discussing various topics of interest. It will also help group members "connect with like-minded people in their communities." Pecunia, who moved to the Fredericksburg area last year, has been in software development for the past 25 years and Web development for half that time. She has run two businesses. Grouvia is now in development. A marketing site is up, but there's no functionality yet. An early version should be ready at the end of September. The company is accepting sign-ups to the mailing list, sharing with users the development progress and asking for feedback and wish lists. Pecunia said that Facebook, an immensely popular social networking site, isn't really a competitor. She said Grouvia is more about getting people away from the computer "and out into the world of real-life face-to-face group activities." She describes it as a combination of Meetup.com, Yahoo Groups, and Groupsite.com. Grouvia will be available anywhere, but Pecunia said she will focus strongly on the Fredericksburg area and Northern Virginia at first. Bill Freehling: 540/374-5405
