Why 'celebrate' the destruction of Fredericksburg? Date published: 9/17/2009
Why 'celebrate' Will someone with more knowledge of history than I possess explain why "Yankees in Falmouth" is being celebrated this weekend? From what I have read, the Union army reduced Fredericksburg to rubble from Chatham Heights. It took Stafford almost 100 years to recover from the presence of the Union army. The local people most definitely suffered and died because of their presence. Was their presence here legal under the Constitution, or was it because they had the power? Were they making total war against the people of Virginia? Didn't the Union army execute civilians who were trying to protect their property? Has the federal government ever apologized for Will the city of Chambersburg, Pa., celebrate the visit by the Confederates when they burned the city to the ground? If all these atrocities were committed in this area, why would we celebrate it? Are we supposed to forget history? I would assume that Fredericksburg is in the planning stages for the 150th anniversary in 2012 of the Union army reducing the city to rubble, making all their citizens refugees, and allowing the Army to loot the downtown homes and businesses. Yes, let's eliminate US & Virginia History; then maybe we can start on Geography, etc, etc, etc,
NOTE: On a recent Radio talk the other morning: The survey had been "Who was the First President of the United States". ONE in FOUR school age kids got it right ! Most ADULTS, could NOT tell the 1 - 4 Presidents. Does that tell you anything about HISTORY ????
and he can go thru all the US History books and blot out the parts that he feels are bad, and we'll never mention them again so we don't have to hear him cry about how the North wasn't nice to the South when they were fighting THE CIVIL WAR. This was a pivotal point in time for the slaves and even the freed black in the area. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is when many were informed that they were in fact being freed!
why we should celebrate "Yankess in Falmouth." Falmouth was an embarcation point for the newly freed. I am a direct descendent of Charles Abselem Mangham, 13th GA Confederate Guards (1861-1865).
The civil war is still being fought with Wilson being a racist calling Obama a liar. What the south needs to learn is they lost and should stop whining, Why let people know you still support a bunch of losers?
Out of the 75,000 tea party protestors from DC last weekend, there must be some still around the area. Perhaps we could muster a brigade's worth and deploy them across the river so they can't shout and make threats. Should rile them dam yankees. Let us have an element of them in their large SUVs and block key access points on River Road so those camping yankees can't get to WaWa for their cafe lattes.
