Dr. Gerhard Kosmahly, 89, of Mineral died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Hanover Health and Rehabilitation, where he was recuperating from major surgery.
A native of Germany, he immigrated to the United States with his late wife, Marga Kosmahly, and young daughter, Helga. Upon completing his medical training requirements, he started a general medical practice in 1960 in Mineral, where he practiced for over 30 years before retiring in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Gudrun Kosmahly; his daughter Helga K. Gallahan and her husband, William B. Gallahan, of Colonial Beach; his daughter Karen K. Wiles and her husband, Edwin O. Wiles, of Mechanicsville; three grandsons, Derek Gallahan of New York City, N.Y., Colin Gallahan of Winston-Salem, N.C., and T.J. Wiles of Baton Rouge, La.; and four great-grandchildren, Nell and Samantha Gallahan of New York City, and Will and Thomas Gallahan of Winston-Salem. Other survivors include his stepsons, Hans-Peter Loew of Germany, along with his daughter, Anna Loew Stevenson of Missouri, and Alexander Loew of Germany.
Burial will be private, and the family would like any expressions of sympathy to be made to the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department, 201 E. First St., Mineral, Va. 23117, or the Mineral Volunteer Rescue Squad, 203 E. First St., Mineral Va. 23117.
