VDOT sets plans for I-95 closings

Interstate 95 will be completely closed early tomorrow and Wednesday mornings between Exits 161 and 163 in Fairfax County.

All traffic, in both directions, will be halted for up to 30 minutes at a time after midnight, and again between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.

Traffic may be slow on I-95 before the full closure, as two lanes in both directions will be shut down at 10:30 p.m. today and tomorrow as workers prepare.

The Virginia Department of Transportation must shut down all lanes so sign mast arms can be lifted across the interstate. The new signs coordinate with the section of interstate under construction between the Fairfax County Parkway and the Occoquan River. VDOT is widening I-95 there from three to four lanes.

Motorists can wait on I-95 and endure 45-minute delays, or take U.S. 301 or U.S. 1 as alternate routes.

Trucks taller than 13 feet, 4 inches cannot use U.S. 1, however, due to a bridge with height restrictions.
