Leon Lysher: Still more to his wonderful story
On Sept. 5 at the Fredericksburg Country Club, amid showers of love and appreciation from his extended family and fishing and hunting buddies, Leon Lysher celebrated his 80th birthday. As sincere and appropriate as all the personal adulations were, there is more to the story. Leon Lysher was a leader among the young professionals who transformed the Naval Proving Ground at Dahlgren from a river test range to a complete R&D activity as the Naval Surface Warfare Center. While Leon held significant formal positions of power and authority at Dahlgren, he was a leader long before he achieved those positions. A leader is someone you follow because you want to, not because you have to. By that definition Leon is a great leader. From the day of his arrival until he retired, his advice and counsel was sought and followed. It was not his position, but his competence and integrity that led people to seek and heed his advice. Not only did he lead as a professional at NSWC, but through activities with the King George High School sports booster club he became a community leader. One of the things I appreciated most in my time at Dahlgren was having Leon Lysher as a professional associate and a personal friend. He was an inspiration to everyone with whom he worked. The community should appreciate such a life well lived. James E. Colvard King George The writer is a former technical director at NSWC.
Stay the course...
