NOT SO NICE

The Harry Nice Bridge, spanning the Potomac River near Dahlgren, links Virginia and Maryland and is the last river crossing before the Woodrow Wilson Bridge some 40 miles upstream. Increasingly, the bridge has become a way for travelers to bypass Washington and commuters to avoid I-95. Weekend traffic can queue up for miles waiting to cross the two-lane span.

It's time for an upgrade. The Maryland Department of Transportation has been looking at such a project since 2006. On Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m., MDOT will hold a public hearing at Potomac Elementary School in Dahlgren to discuss alternatives. Affected Virginians should weigh in with ideas to make the Nice Bridge nicer. (You knew that was coming.)

SEN. WHO?

Massachusetts is racing to change its law so that a successor to Sen. Ted Kennedy can be appointed by the governor. Part of the rush: To ensure a 60-seat majority in the Senate for the Democrats as health care legislation comes up.

Which is understandable, considering that the state's mandatory health care plan is failing. Massachusetts could save up to $10 billion per year if the feds take over.
