Jingle, jingle: Christmas (shopping) is here
In keeping with the holiday traditions of the past few years, Christmas is starting earlier. Labor Day marked the end of summer and the beginning of the holiday buying season. At Lowe's, an inflatable Santa in a helicopter can be observed one aisle away from the full-size, animated Grim Reaper preparing for Halloween. Any concerns about the economy and the recession have been allayed by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke. This news comes just in time to alleviate any fears with consumers and may help to prime the pump Now that the banks have their bailout packages, we should expect to see an avalanche of pre-approved credit card applications and home equity loan offers as these institutions try to activate their newfound wealth. Perhaps the essence of the stimulus package lies in the rhetoric of the central bank, rather than the underlying fundamentals of our national economy. Ed Witalec Stafford
