The Girl Scout Commonwealth Council of Virginia honored nine people, including three University of Mary Washington leaders, at the ninth annual "Women of Distinction" awards program Tuesday.

The event at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center paid tribute to a longtime professor, a veteran administrator and an alumni leader.

Recognized were:

Brenda Vogel, professor of education and director of education programs. She joined the university faculty in 1977 and served as chair, coordinator of teacher education services and director of field experiences for the Department of Education before her appointment in 1999 as director of education programs for the Stafford campus.

Sabrina Carey Johnson, associate vice president for human resources and Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity officer. She has held that position since she arrived on campus in 1997. She also holds a law degree and served as a judicial law clerk in the Alexandria Circuit Court.

Sue Bridi, a 1981 UMW graduate, is vice president and branch manager for PNC Bank in Fredericksburg. She has worked in local banking for more than 30 years and has shared her financial expertise with many businesses and families. She is president of the UMW Alumni Association through 2010 and represents the alumni on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

The awards program also recognized Neda McGuire, owner of Comfort Keepers; the Rev. Theresie Houghton, director of Olde Forge Junction Inc.; Jane Hollenbeck Conner, retired educator, author and historian; Mickie Galik, resource development manager for Rappahannock United Way; Melanie Lashus, Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense test and evaluation project lead at Dahlgren; and Carrie H. O'Malley, partner at Hirschler Fleischer PC.

The nine women were recognized for their leadership and impact on the community through professional and volunteer achieve-ments in the Greater Fredericksburg region.
