Nancy Gilmore

Nancy Mary Travers Lay Gilmore, 55, of Stafford County died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born in Tokyo, Japan, and grew up in Alexandria, Va., graduating from T.C. Williams High School in 1972. She received a B.A. in art history from Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., graduating with honors in 1976, and an M.Ed. degree from Virginia Tech in 1996.

She started her journalism career as an editor with Aviation Daily in Washington, D.C. Nancy was a freelance writer and photographer for several years as her family was growing. From 1998 through early 2009, she held several positions at The Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, including copy editing and travel feature writing, and was a member of Virginia Press Women.

Nancy was an active member of the Unity Church in Fredericksburg, and had many friends at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fredericksburg. In recent years she discovered her talents as a watercolorist and studied with local artist Johnny Johnson. In addition, she employed her artistic talents in creating popular handmade beaded jewelry in a home-based business, Gem Dandy.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband of 29 years, Richard; her daughters, Emily Gilmore of Stafford and Tracy Gilmore of the home; sisters Mary Lay Peck, Elizabeth Lay Wilder and Susan Lay, all of Florida; and many other loving relatives and friends. She also leaves behind her beloved pets, Cam'ron, Tuxedo Jones and Captain Courageous.

A memorial gathering will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Found & Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, with a reception following at the funeral home.
