My already enormous respect for Rep. Rob Wittman continues to grow.

The Sept. 14 job fair he organized at UMW's Stafford campus was notable for two reasons.

First, he's focused on the right things. With all the other significant, game-changing pieces of legislation on the table, a typical representative might be forgiven for being holed up in his office just trying to keep up.

But Rep. Wittman is not typical. Many legislators and local governments talk about jobs and helping people find work, but Rob got it done. A larger than expected number of potential employers set up booths to receive a larger than expected number of job seekers. It was a well-executed and timely event.

Second, he's intensely focused on serving and encouraging his constituents. Rob warmly greeted everyone. His staff was prepared with helpful information about the assembled employers.

There was no throng of news reporters or political groupies separating him from the people. He was accessible and engaged. To those who are desperate for work, an encouraging word is far more important than a stump speech.

Rob's leadership, energy, and character are a model for the other 534 legislators on Capitol Hill.
