George W. Settle

George William Settle Sr., 75, of Culpeper died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at his residence. He was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Culpeper to the late Jesse and Virginia Settle.

George was a hard worker all of his life and took pride in everything he did. In his earlier years, he enjoyed going to Charles Town races. He was a huge Cowboys fan, and loved playing cards, spending time visiting and talking with his family, friends and neighbors.

He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nellie L. Settle of Culpeper; four children, Thomas Settle Sr. and his wife, Laurie, of Fredericksburg, Joyce Young and her husband, Ivan, of Locust Grove, Cathy Covington and her fiance, Rodney Hawkins, of Reva, and George Settle Jr. and his wife, Heather, of Ruckersville.

Additional survivors include 11 grandchildren: Melissa Stanley and her husband, Wesley, of Brandy Station, Marine Cpl. Thomas Settle Jr. and his wife, Stephanie, of Quantico, Stacy Young and her fiance, Jamie, of Richardsville, Ivan Young Jr. and his wife, Stephanie, of Fort Worth, Texas, Tracy and Cristal Covington, both of Culpeper, Stephanie Young of Locust Grove, and Arlena, Abby, Lexy and Aliyah Settle, all of Ruckersville.

He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Bryanna, Cameron, Kaitlin, Riley, Branson and Trey; three sisters, Emma Pullen of Culpeper and Ida Bailey and Helen Mills, both of Rixeyville; a dear sister-in-law, Janet Settle-Burke; and numerous nieces, nephews and additional family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmie D. Settle Sr., and two sisters, Louise Fincham and Viola Pullen.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. John Burke officiating.
