I am writing in reference to the proposed work to be done on the Harry W. Nice Bridge (also known as the Potomac River Bridge), which connects Charles County, Md., to King George County ["Public speaks on Nice Bridge proposal," Sept. 26].
I lived in that area for more than 30 years and always looked forward to making the necessary changes in that bridge.
Seven alternates were proposed at the Sept. 24 public hearing.
The one that I believe would make the most sense to Maryland, Virginia, and the naval base at Dahlgren is alternate 4: "Would build a new span north of the existing bridge for southbound traffic. The existing span would be renovated and carry two lanes of northbound traffic. This design infringes on seven acres of business land and 39 acres of parkland. Cost $460 million to $510 million."
