Julia Holloway Widic

The children of Julia Holloway Widic are sad to announce the passing of their mother Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, in Fredericksburg.

Julia, 91, was born Nov. 5, 1917, in Berlin, Md., the daughter of Martin Jerome Holloway and Sadie Fisher Holloway.

She grew up and lived most of her life in Berlin. She was an avid gardener and loved tending to her magnificent beds of flowers and vegetables. She had assisted her husband for many years on their farm.

A faithful member of Friendship United Methodist Church, she contributed countless hours teaching Sunday school and summer Bible school, supporting numerous church fundraising events and providing flowers from her garden.

Julia was a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Worcester Chapter 102. But foremost, she was a loving mother and wife who delighted in her activities as homemaker and excelled at cooking, canning, relish making and flower arranging. She enjoyed sharing the beauty and bounty of her gardens. She had a kind, generous and loving heart, and she will be missed.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Frank A. Widic Sr., and her eldest daughter, Joan Widic Palmer; her brothers Calvin, Edward, and Vincent Holloway, and sisters Frances Hudson, Rosalie Davis, Edith Voellger, Reba Dennis, Dorothy Brittingham and Mary Farnandez.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Widic of Crofton, Md., and her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Maureen Widic of Fredericksburg. She is also survived by three grandchildren and their spouses/partners and five great-grandchildren: Deb Palmer and Anne Terry of Baltimore, Md., Brian and Beth Widic of Leesburg, Kim and Jared Altura of Alameda, Calif.; Zachary, Sydney and Ethan Widic and Chloe and Alexis Altura. In addition to her immediate family, Julia is survived by her sisters Ruth Bailey, Madlyn Massey, Violet Lynch and Christine Brasure, and sister-in-law Irma Holloway, all of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

A viewing celebrating Julia's life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Friendship United Methodist Church, Berlin, Md., followed by the funeral service at 2 PM. The Rev. Linda Mariner and the Rev. Jack Savage will officiate. Interment will follow the service, in Evergreen Cemetery, Berlin. A reception and luncheon at Friendship United Methodist Church will be held after the interment.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Friendship United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 10537 Friendship Road, Berlin, Md. 21811, or to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
