UMW rally leads the way to clean energy

Congratulations to the University of Mary Washington Ecology Club for coordinating the Sept. 17 "Clean energy, bright future" rally at Hurkamp Park.

The rally's message was loud and clear. It is time to shift to a clean-energy economy nationally, in Virginia, and locally.

Investing in clean sources of energy while supporting energy efficiency and conservation will help jump-start Virginia's economy by providing stable jobs. We will reduce electricity bills, save money, and have reliable sources of energy, while improving our health and that of our natural environment.

The House of Representatives has passed the 2009 American Clean Energy and Security Act. ACES will create clean-energy jobs, achieve energy independence, and reduce global warming pollution.

The Senate is currently debating ACES. The next step we can take is to send a clear message to Sen. Mark Warner and Sen. Jim Webb that it's time to move America to clean energy and energy independence.

Spotsylvania County Supervisor Hap Connors, Robert Bennett (founder of Energy & Environment Inc.), and Nate Delano (UMW Ecology Club) energized the rally.

The Sierra Club motto is that each one of us can help "make a difference." We can make that difference by contacting Sens. Warner and Webb. Citizen involvement can offset the current negative political partisanship and lobbying obstructions taking place in Washington.

comparing computers and cars to the energy debate is silly. Cars and computers were a choice but this energy crap will not be a choice. If the govt. gets behind the cap and trade, then my bills are going up through no choice of my own. I am tired of having money stolen from me by local and fed. govt. I believe in paying taxes for certain things but they are getting rediculous. Enough is enough, now I am signing off to go spray some freon in the air :)

we do need to green America, but let's be smart about it. (posted by Mandrake , Oct. 17, 2009 4:21 pm)    0 likes
For instance cap n trade is just another scheme the smart crooks figured out to make a fortune at the expense of the American People. Yes, do expand solar, wind, underwater turbines, algae engines, clean coal derivatives, clean oil derivatives, core heat and on and on. And beginning at home don't turn on your your lights if you don't really need them, use warm water instead of hot, flush every other pee, turn down you water heater temp to 125 or so and on and on. You save money and help the environment

Why did you bring up ELF in the first place? Why did you think it would help to insult these young people? If you can't take it, why do you think it's a good idea to dish it out? Like I said, if you are against being responsible, then China would be a good place for you.

I didn't say that no obstacles exist or that it might take some time. But why argue against moving the process of transitioning to sustainable, non-polluting energy sources forward? Do you think the first computers were all cheap and reliable? Did they say "oh well, they're not cheap and reliable, so we should just quit"? Do you think the first autos or aircraft were economically viable on a mass market scale? Did they throw up their hands and quit? Let's be adults, grow some, and take responsibility.

Go take a chill pill before you have a coranary. Where did I mention anything about what you wrote. I suppose you support ELF yourself.
