Robert C. Ochs

Robert Calvert Ochs, 93, of Stafford County passed away at the home of his daughter Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009.

Born in Wakefield, Ky., and educated as an electronics engineer, he served in the Merchant Marines as a radio operator on ships that sailed the Great Lakes.

During World War II, he served on allied supply ships that were headed for foreign ports. He made a career as an employee of the Federal Communications Commission, serving in various parts of the country before retiring in the Washington, D.C., area, after more than 30 years service.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Annette Ochs.

He is survived by his son, Daniel C. Ochs and his wife, Sylvia, of Estero, Fla.; his daughter, Norma Starkweather and her husband, Robert H. Starkweather, of Stafford; grandchildren Danny Ochs of Estero, Fla., Maria Balakrishnan and husband Ashok Balakrishnan of Kanata, Ontario, Canada, Andrew Tyler and his wife, Patti Ann, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Tom Starkweather of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mr. Ochs also leaves great-grandsons Ethan Balakrishnan, Rohan Balakrishnan and Grant Tyler; his sister, Mary Lynn of Charlestown, Ind., and brother, Curtis Ochs Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Bloomfield, Ky. Numerous nieces and nephews and beloved friends also survive him.

A memorial service will be held at his daughter's home at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

The family is under the care of Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel.
