Culpeper Town Council approves paying for new roof on renovated police station Date published: 10/28/2009

During the middle of last night's rainstorm, the Culpeper Town Council voted to spend $153,000 to replace the roof on the building that is being renovated as the new police station. However, it was not the wet weather but finan- C.L. Lewis, the general contractor on the $1.6 million renovation project, informed the Council that if the change order was not initiated before Nov. 1, the price would jump to $162,000. "I'd like to know what the reason is for the $8,500 jump after Nov. 1?" asked Vice Mayor Billy Yowell. Bob Anderson of Dominion Development Resources, the architectural firm designing the renovations, said that Lewis projected losing 15 days of construction time if the Council waited until its regular November meeting to make a decision. The general contractor calculated that delay to cost $8,405. Actually, the new roof will cost $187,000 but $32,000 had already been budgeted for adding insulation to the present roof on the old Aileen Knitwear factory building (its original function) and another $2,160 had been designated for minor roof repairs. Town staff recommended the new sloping roof--which comes with a 30-year guarantee--as opposed to repairing the old flat roof, which has no guarantee. "Staff still believes this is the right thing to do," Town Manager Jeff Muzzy told the council at the outset of last night's meeting. In May of 2008 the town paid Providence Bible Church $2.8 million for the building on Old Brandy Road. With renovations, furniture, security systems and moving expenses, the total cost of the project is $5.48 million. The new police station is expected to be ready by late next fall. Last night's vote was 6-1, with Mayor Pranas Rimeikis casting the only negative ballot. Council members Duke duFrane and Chip Coleman were absent. Donnie Johnston:
