Jett to lead state sheriffs' association
Stafford Sheriff Charles E. Jett is now president of the Virginia Sheriffs' Association.
The Virginia Sheriffs' Association acts as the primary voice for Virginia sheriffs in the General Assembly and has more than 7,800 members. The VSA works in a collective manner to promote laws that protect residents, as well as to raise awareness of needs that law enforcement agencies may have that will help them maintain a safe and secure community.
The Stafford County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency in Stafford County and also handles court services, court security and civil processing.
"I look forward to working with the VSA and my fellow sheriffs to ensure safe communities throughout the state of Virginia," Jett said.
Brooke Point grad honored at W&L
Mike Kuntz of Stafford, a junior at Washington & Lee University, was recognized at the Celebrating Student Success monthly reception.
Kuntz, who graduated as valedictorian from Brooke Point High School, is majoring in biochemistry with a minor in German. He was awarded the James Keith Shillington Scholarship for Organic Chemistry; the B.S. Stephenson Scholarship for German; and the Doctors Reid and White Scholarship, which is awarded to a pre-med student. He has twice been a Robert E. Lee Research Scholar.
Kuntz volunteers for Washington & Lee's Campus Kitchens, leading weekly shifts in food preparation. He also volunteers at the Rockbridge Area Free Clinic and is a treasurer of Sigma Nu fraternity.

Adults needed to mentor local kids
Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeing a big increase in the number of children who want a mentor. The waiting list includes 21 children in Spotsylvania, 25 in Stafford, 15 in Fredericksburg, nine in King George and three in Caroline. African-American men are sought to mentor some of the 55 waiting boys.
A Volunteer Information Session will be held Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at 325A Wallace St., Fredericksburg. Couples are welcome, as are college students. RSVP to 540/371-7444 or

Nominate residents for Helms Award
The Stafford County Parks and Recreation Commission is taking nominations for the 2010 Florence D. Helms Award, established in 1975 in honor of Helms, who made significant contributions to the youth of the county. It is the highest award given in honor of someone who has worked with the county's youth.
A registered nurse, Helms was instrumental in establishing a volunteer program of medical examinations by doctors for sports programs.
Awards may be given to an individual or an organization. Criteria include years of service, dedication, fruits of accomplishments and the degree of interest and concern for youth.

United Way needs tax-preparation help
The Rappahannock United Way needs volunteers to prepare income taxes for low- and medium-income families. Tax sites will be staffed on various days and times throughout the region. Volunteers would work a minimum of three hours a week.
A minimal knowledge of tax rules, basic computer skills is required. The United Way will provide all reference material, training and testing.
Greeter volunteers also are needed. This requires no study or testing, just the ability to meet with, interview and organize the prospective tax payers.
