'Reverse commute' won't work on VRE

I am writing in response to the Oct. 29 editorial ["For stops past VRE, elect Skinner & Pitts"].

I believe your editorial staff is either misinformed or misleading readers with the following statement: "The Spotsylvania Technology center, which aims to attract lucrative federal contracts, says that a VRE station would allow Northern Virginians to come here to work while continuing to live there."

In fact, VRE runs only one way during commuting times; that is, VRE runs only north in the morning and only south in the afternoon and evening. That would not work for commuters of Northern Virginia.

In fact, unless things have changed on I-95 from nine years ago--when I used to commute from Northern Virginia through the Fredericksburg area to southern Maryland--I found that traffic was nowhere near as heavy going south on I-95 in the morning versus going north on I-95, and vice versa in the afternoon.

The biggest strike against Northern Virginians commuting to the Fredericksburg area is the fact that, at least for federal employees, the further you get from Washington, the fewer the higher salary grades there are. That is, there are fewer GS-13 and higher positions outside of D.C. than there are in D.C.

Because the private sector needs to compete for employees with the federal government, I would expect that the situation is similar for private-sector employees.

As someone who currently uses VRE to commute to D.C., although I am not a Spotsylvania resident, I would like to see Spotsylvania join VRE. However, I felt obligated to point out obvious misinformation.

Correction ... sorry (posted by sacha , Nov. 4, 2009 7:28 am)
The 4,403 number represents Skinner's AND Pitts majority. My apologies! But it's still a victory!

VRE's supporters voted yesterday (posted by sacha , Nov. 4, 2009 7:27 am)
4,403 voters in Lees Hill District voted for the VRE candidate, Skinner. It's what the majority of the Lees Hill citizens want and what the Battlefield District citizens want where the VRE candidate Pitts also won. I think this is a victory for progress and adds one more reason to my list of why I'm glad I live in Spotsylvanida!

VRE will not bring high tech jobs and High speed rail will not come to the VRE (posted by larryg , Nov. 3, 2009 5:26 pm)
station. VRE has some benefits and may be justified in the minds of some but not everyone and I don't think it does any of us any good to make claims about what VRE will do that are simply not true. VRE - should succeed or fail based on the facts - nothing more, nothing less. those who are trying to sell it by saying it will do more than it really will - are, IMHO doing a disservice to the issue. Be honest. Be truthful. Let the VRE issue be decided - on it's merits.

there are things that VRE cannot do (posted by larryg , Nov. 3, 2009 5:00 pm)
" of the DOD offices [20k jobs] located mainly in the Crystal City ... would be moved to either Fort Belvoir or Quantico [west of I-95]. What is VRE going to do for riders when this happens? Answer For passengers traveling to Fort Belvoir, options include taking the Fairfax Connector bus or leaving a car at the Lorton VRE station for personal transport. http://tinyurl.com/yjrayaw VRE is .... fixed rail .... folks... the only jobs it can serve regular or reverse are those jobs right on the rail line.

Mich (posted by KGYakker , Nov. 3, 2009 2:57 pm)
Mich, I would be all for KG joining VRE. I'd love to see a station in KG, though it may still be closer for me to catch the train in Stafford. However, I highly doubt the BOS is even contemplating that. I don't know, I never attend their meetings and we voters are kept in the dark on a lot of KG issues, it seems. Anyway, while I would be in favor of it, it is not my highest priority for why I would or would not vote for someone, there are other issues that take precedence. Paul Probus
