University of Mary Washington Executive Vice President Rick Hurley, who served as acting president for about a year, plans to retire May 1.
Hurley, 62, came to UMW nine years ago and has been a chief financial officer while also directing capital projects, public safety, human resources and business operations.
"It's been professionally rewarding and fun to come to work--a great place with a lot of great people," Hurley said.
Previously, he was vice president for administration and finance at Longwood College, now a university, for 15 years.
He served as acting UMW president after William Frawley was fired from the job in April 2007.
Current President Judy Hample named him her second-in-command after she arrived in July 2008.
In a statement, UMW Rector Nanalou Sauder thanked Hurley for being acting president during what she called a "very difficult time for the institution."
"I know Rick Hurley as a person of integrity, of high competence and of unfailing honesty " she said.
During last year's graduation, Hurley received a Washington Medallion for "extraordinary service to the university that has made a lasting and indelible impact," according to a UMW press release.
In addition to his role at UMW, Hurley has been involved in the Rappahannock United Way, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and other local groups.
His future plans include spending more time with his wife, Rose, and their family, continuing his work with community organizations and exploring new opportunities.
"I'm not ready to sit in a rocking chair on the porch," Hurley said. "I thought maybe I'd like to do something different outside of higher education."
He said his retirement in May will mark the end of 25 years in Virginia public education. He originally thought he would retire a year earlier, but declines in the stock market prevented it.
"The market has improved and that milestone just caused me to say, 'It's time,'" Hurley said.
