Robert H. B. Nugent

Robert H.B. Nugent, 89, of Oxford, N.C., formerly of Spotsylvania County, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.

He was born in Ruston, La., the son of Matthew Colombus and Mary Belle Hinton Nugent. He was a 1938 graduate of Ruston High School, attended Louisiana Tech, was a Navy veteran during World War II, and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America for 60 years.

Mr. Nugent owned a construction business for 20 years and was a member on the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors. He also lived in Carthage, Texas, for seven years prior to retiring to Granville County, N.C., in 1985. He was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church and a former member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church and The Gideons International.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Merton Douglas Nugent; a daughter, Susan Nugent Lambert of Tampa, Fla.; his granddaughter, Kathleen Michelli of Baton Rouge, La.; and four great-grandchildren. He was preced in death by daughter Mary Olivia Nugent and a son, Frederick Nugent.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Grassy Creek Baptist Church. And a graveside service with military rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fredericksburg.
