A dam, a Walmart, and a community

The Lake of the Woods dam issue has gotten out of hand.

On top of the poor economy, taxes due, and Christmas right on our heels, the residents are being forced to pay a $1,200 additional assessment by Dec. 1 in total, or in increments with 6 percent interest added on, to fix a dam that many are saying doesn't need fixing.

The state is being "generous" by giving a grant of $1 million, with LOW residents having to make up the difference of $5 million.

People are also complaining that the battlefield will be ruined with the addition of Walmart. Has anyone realized that Lake of the Woods was built on battlefield?

Just wait.... (posted by navyorchid , Nov. 5, 2009 6:17 pm)    0 likes
After Walmart is built, the State may re-evaluate the small dam at LOW and require upgrades to it due to the new development and potential loss of life! Poor planning is expensive and someone has to pay the bill!

A Congressional Committee? Are you serious? (posted by wideopenspace , Nov. 5, 2009 4:24 pm)    0 likes
Those committee's are a joke that can be bought off by the highest bidder, those bidders are called lobbyists. These are the same type of committee's that have tried to bring down MLB, bring down the NCAA, they even tried to bring down the NFL over the Patriot's Tape-Gate scandal. You have to take what these committee's say and do with a grain of salt and sift thru the evidence yourself. Nothing happened on that hill of importance in the Civil War. The hill was too far away to be affective with any fighting

Honoring the past (posted by romy23 , Nov. 5, 2009 4:21 pm)    0 likes
Yes, parts of the battlefield and its viewshed have already been degraded, but does that mean we should just run roughshod over the entire thing? No. How about we try to protect what is left to honor the memory and sacrifices of our ancestors who fought there.

You can argue that many parts of Virginia are a battlefield; however, a Congressional committee determined that the land Walmart wants to build on is part of the battlefield. It would be a shame if this happened.
