Marjorie Barrett Garvey, a mother, singer and actress, died of heart failure Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009. She died at home surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Garvey was born in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Ethel and James Barrett. After a successful career as an operatic singer and an actress, performing in TV, movies and Broadway, she was wed to John Joseph Garvey, a composer and teacher of music.
In addition to being the mother of six children, Mrs. Garvey worked at the Oxford University Press, and served as United Nations NGO representative for the United States Coalition for Life.
Mrs. Garvey was a faithful Catholic, dedicated to fighting for the rights of the weak and defenseless, especially the unborn.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses: Johanna (Garvey) and Jeffrey Rubin, Maria (Garvey) and Michael O'Grady, Marjorie Garvey, Peggy Garvey, Pat (Garvey) and Thomas Seoh, and Sean and Rosanne Garvey; and 14 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas, Va. 20110.
