Marie Cron Wallace, chemist, quilter and homemaker, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center in Culpeper.
Mrs. Wallace was born Minerva Marie Cron in Amarillo, Texas, on Aug. 2, 1917. She received a B.A. in chemistry from Mary Hardin Baylor University in Texas in 1939, and an M.S. in biochemistry from Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kan., in 1941.
After teaching high school math and science in Texas, she moved in 1942 to Washington, D.C., where she was a metallurgist at the National Bureau of Standards. She met Edward John Wallace there, and they were married Feb. 16, 1945. They were members of Mount Vernon Place Methodist Church in Washington until moving in 1955 to McLean, where they became active members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wallace sang in the choir at both churches.
In 2000, Mrs. Wallace moved to Culpeper to be near her daughters. She was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison until her death.
Mrs. Wallace was an avid seamstress and quilter, and designed and completed more than 200 quilts, including annual entries in the Hoffman Challenge from its beginnings until 2006. She was member of the McLean chapter of Quilters Unlimited, and Novum Quilters in Madison.
Her husband, Edward, died Oct. 1, 1997. She is survived by her children, Diane Cheryl Heckel of Madison, David James Wallace and wife of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Patricia Minerva Bullock and husband of Newport, Ore., and Kathleen Mollie Edwards and husband of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Cheryl Heckel Paulson and husband of Richmond, Nancy Marie Heckel-Harper and husband of Rochester, N.Y., Frederick William Poe Heckel of Charlotte, N.C., Christina Lynn Thomas Ferree and husband of Falmouth, and Robert Allen Thomas of Falmouth; five great-grandchildren, Isabella Carina Paulson, Amalia Katherine Paulson, Benjamin Gordon Evans Harper, Ashleigh Noel Ferree and Peyton Thomas Ferree; and numerous friends and relatives.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Hebron Lutheran Church, Madison, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
