ColumnWhat does the month of November have in store for you? Date published: 11/6/2009
THE LEAVES have changed color, people have dressed as their favorite Power Ranger or Pokemon--and now it's time to have some fun. As everyone is aware, Thanksgiving is just ahead, but let's be honest with ourselves--November is really just one step closer to the actual holidays. Here are a couple of local events to keep in mind this month, while we're waiting for December to roll around: Black Friday--the infamous holiday of overcrazed deal-seeking shoppers looking to find the best price on their kids' Tickle Me Elmo, takes place the day after Thanksgiving on Nov. 27. Attending and participating in Black Friday is just as much a cultural event as it is an adventure. Remember back when you were standing outside of Borders for the release of the new Harry Potter book? Well, this busy day is similar, but with a broader age range of participants. Join the frenzy! Grab a thermos of coffee or hot cocoa, wake up at 4 a.m. and hit Kohl's or GameStop for their super-amazing deals. You can find things for yourself and others--not to mention you can snap a few ungodly shots of you and your friends at 4 in the morning for future Facebook posts. Find out where all the great deals are happening at blackfriday.gotta deal.com and have fun, but whatever you do, don't cut in line. The Country/Western-inspired Down Home Ball is happening on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Down Home Ball is being held from 6 p.m. to midnight at 401 Charles St. at the Purina Tower, which is right past the train tracks in downtown Fredericksburg. It is a night full of chatting and music from The Gourdvine String Band and Mountain Remedy, games, raffles, and tons of family and adult fun. Whether you know how to get your Western boogie on or not, the night's proceeds will benefit Downtown Green Inc. (which maintains many acres of organic gardens downtown). So help your community out; invite a special someone or your best friend, and dance the night away for $15. For more details, visit www.downtowngreens .org.
