A private fiefdom rules over LOW

When I read that the contract for the Lake of the Woods dam had been put on hold, I thought, finally, a smart move by the board.

When I saw that the board went ahead with the contract, I realized that given certain returning board members, "smart" was not the correct word.

While past boards certainly have worked diligently on behalf of the association members, there have been exceptions of fiscal irresponsibility. Unfortunately, certain board members allowed the prior general manager to run our community as his private fiefdom, making poor decisions.

Because I did not give approval for the two white elephants in the lake, take my portion of the costs for the Woods and community center's construction and overruns from those expenses, and put that amount toward the dam on my behalf.

The Virginia Property Owners' Association Act, section 55-514 (authority to levy special assessments) indicates, "A majority of votes cast, in person or by proxy, at a meeting of the membership convened in accordance with the provision of the association's bylaws within 60 days of promulgation of the notice of the assessment shall rescind or reduce the special assessment."

It appears the members were not notified of this right.

I already pay an exorbitant fee each year just to have a barcode on my side window. If I want to use the additional amenities, I have the "privilege" to pay extra.

Given the wastefulness of previous boards, please reduce my basic association fees.

As for prior board members who have come back to haunt again, if I could I would fire you.

Although I agree with some points, John Bailey did not make ANY decisions without a majority vote from the BOD. That's right, majority...and members of the BOD are elected by LOW members! I'm sure if you looked, only a small percentage of members actually return their ballots. And under John Bailey, the contract was put on hold. He's gone and you received a bill for $1,200.00. Bottom line, everyone has a choice - live in LOW or move out!
