ReviewsWhat is Golden Monkey Tattoo and Body Piercing Date published: 11/14/2009

With tattoos, piercing and even music, there is a lot to enjoy at the recently opened Golden Monkey Tattoo and Body Piercing on Dixon Street near Lansdowne Road.
The shop is quite welcoming, unlike many tattoo studios. Owners Jeremiah Hirsch and Drew Baker, Mike Tschirn and Greg Duffek, are all talented and professional artists in piercing and tattoos. The owners make customers feel right at home, even when getting a rod through their ear or ink injected into their skin. But there's more to know about this fine establishment--it's also a full music venue. When Hirsch decided to take his artistic talent and open up his own tattoo and body piercing shop, he also saw an opportunity to bring his two favorite worlds--music and art--together into one building. "The two scenes intertwine so much, anyway," he explained. Hirsch had been booking shows for 4 years through Messiah Booking, so it was no stretch for him to add his love of music to to the list of things Golden Monkey has to offer. "It really brings the two worlds together, which is how I think it should be," Hirsch said. But what on earth kind of music does one play live at a tattoo and body piercing shop? Although it may seem difficult to imagine, the music is not much different than what is playing in other places where teens go. "Indie, pop punk, metal, hardcore as we expand we want to do everything," Hirsch said. Hirsch added that if a country band wanted to play, he would let them. "I love this place, because it's bringing people together, not singling them out," he said.
With such a unique combination of music and art, there can only be good things to come from Golden Monkey. Though the shop/venue already has its loyal regulars Hirsch said he hopes to see it grow into a regular Fredericksburg hangout. "I want it to grow. I want it to be a local spot where people can grow," said Hirsch. "I am looking forward to watching it get bigger." Stephanie Boscovitch is a senior
