Celebrate 60th anniversary

Verna and Gordon Dwyer celebrated 60 years of marriage. The couple were married on Oct. 8, 1949, in Winchendon, Mass. at the Old Center Congregational Church.

After finishing his duty with the Navy during WWII, Gordon graduated from Tufts College in Medford, Mass. Verna graduated from Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing in Newton, Mass. They met at a hospital canteen while they were playing pool with friends. Gordon gave Verna a diamond engagement ring while they were visiting the Minuteman statue and the Old North Bridge in Concord, Mass.

They have seven children: Bruce G. of Spotsylvania, Stephen W. (deceased in 2004), Jeffrey A. of Davidson, N.C., Robert S. of Spotsylvania, Janice L. Uhlman of Spotsylvania, Thomas W. of Westboro, Mass., and Laurie B. DeMalia of Hubbardston, Mass. They have wonderful and loving spouses.

Gordon retired from Central District Court in Worcester, Mass., as a Deputy Chief Probation Officer. Verna retired from Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Mass., as an Assist Head Nurse. They moved to Virginia in 1990. They have 29 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren with whom they have had many happy and joyful years. They have been supported by their church affiliation and their church family. The Dwyers have participated in several groups in the Fredericksburg area: Spotsylvania American Legion Post 320, Fredericksburg Area Veterans Memorial Council and the Mary Washington Cardiac Rehab.

They celebrated their anniversary at a gathering at their daughter and son-in-law's home, combined with the wedding of their grandson, Joshua S. Uhlman to Brianne Mingori. They danced to their favorite song "On a Slow Boat to China."
