Date published: 11/15/2009

FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

FAIRFAX

--David Alan Masters, 52, of Fredericksburg was shot and killed by police in Fairfax County on Friday after failing to follow orders to stop his car.

Officers were responding to a reported theft in progress about 1 p.m. near U.S. 1 and Fort Hunt Road. The suspect fled in a vehicle, police said

An officer spotted the vehicle on U.S. 1 near Shields Avenue, and two other officers attempted to stop the car. Masters did not stop until he encountered heavy traffic, police said.

He was subsequently shot in the upper body. His car continued a short distance until it struck another motorist's vehicle.

Masters was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Crime-scene technicians and detectives from homicide and internal affairs are investigating.

Three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending results of the investigation.

Witnesses are asked to call Crime Solvers at 866/411-TIPS or police at 703/691-2131.

"couldnt control their own stupidity". Perfectly describes a guy who stole something, ran from the cops, then when he had to stop because of traffic, tried to "show police his chest" (wtf?). Still doesn't give the police the right to shoot him, but if he was acting like he had a gun or made some threating motion towards the cops should they have to wait to be shot before reacting? Hard to come to a conclusion without more to the story.

what does showing them he had a bypass surgery have to do with stealing and running from the police? showing them a scar doesnt get him special treatment...in fact if i were a cop i would take that as a threat if he got out of the car taking off his shirt as he was approaching me. dont break the law and bad things wont happen. i'm not saying its justified without all the info, but it all boils down to poor decision making can get you killed...easily
