--David Alan Masters, 52, of Fredericksburg was shot and killed by police in Fairfax County on Friday after failing to follow orders to stop his car.Officers were responding to a reported theft in progress about 1 p.m. near U.S. 1 and Fort Hunt Road. The suspect fled in a vehicle, police said
An officer spotted the vehicle on U.S. 1 near Shields Avenue, and two other officers attempted to stop the car. Masters did not stop until he encountered heavy traffic, police said.
He was subsequently shot in the upper body. His car continued a short distance until it struck another motorist's vehicle.
Masters was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Crime-scene technicians and detectives from homicide and internal affairs are investigating.
Three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending results of the investigation.
