"The Power of Peace" was the theme of this year's International Peace Poster Contest, conducted by Lions International. Some 375,000 entries were received, 56 from students at Gayle Middle School in Falmouth.

This was the 22nd annual competition, and the third year that the Greater Falls Run Lions Club sponsored the event at a local school. Students 11-13 are eligible to compete. This year's winners, announced in a ceremony last week, are all 13-year-old eighth-graders.

The Gayle winner was Zach Klinefelter, who received a $200 prize. His poster will be sent to the district competition, which is followed by judging at the state, national and international levels.

"You can find peace anywhere," Zach said. "You just have to look."

The second-place winner was Megan Conrad, who received $100. Winning third place was Jordan Beacom, who received $50.

Honorable-mention ribbons were presented to eighth-graders Maya Birden, Leah Murphy and Aleyse Shannon, and to seventh-grader Celia Alicia.

Gretchen Condon, the local Lions Club president, said, "It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I'm so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions."
