Know your geography, especially this week!

November 17, 2009 12:36 am

Geography Awareness Week was established in 1987 when President Reagan signed legislation establishing the third week in November as the time to showcase geographic education in the U.S.

This celebration is sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Virginia Geographic Alliance, and many other regional and national organizations.

There is a variety of things we can do, from family outings and reading an atlas, to listening to music from other cultures or even trying a foreign cuisine.

One easy way to help promote geographic awareness is to take a virtual tour of the world with MyWonderfulWorld.org.

This online resource is a National Geographic-led campaign to give kids the power of global knowledge.

Geography Awareness Week continues to promote the importance of geography education in the United States.

School-based activities and community programs help to show people the importance of geography within our community. By focusing on increasing geographic literacy and requesting more geography in schools, Americans can strive for success in our global, social, and economic activities.

Happy Geography Awareness Week.
