Two road projects likely to snarl traffic
Road work on Route 2 and Interstate 95 this week could cause traffic delays
Date published: 11/17/2009

By KELLY HANNON

Two road projects have the potential to create traffic jams this week in the Fredericksburg area.

All southbound lanes of Interstate 95 just south of the Massaponax exit in Spotsylvania County will be closed for sporadic 15-minute increments five times between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. tomorrow and Thursday. Even when traffic is allowed through the work zone at mile marker 125, only one of the three southbound lanes will be open.

Steel beams are being lifted over the travel lanes. The beams are needed for an overpass connecting Spotsylvania Parkway with Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, under construction east of I-95.

Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation's Safety Service Patrol will be at the scene to help with traffic control.

Local drivers may consider using U.S. 1 south between Exit 130 in Fredericksburg and Exit 118 at Thornburg as an alternate route.

Starting at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday, a single lane will close in the work zone as workers prepare for the full closure.

And today through Thursday, one lane will be closed in the work zone from 7 a.m. through 3 p.m. On Friday, a single lane will be closed from 7 a.m. to noon.

In addition, a daytime project on Tidewater Trail (State Route 2) will delay traffic near the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania border.

One lane will be closed at a railroad crossing between Lee Hill Drive and Shannon Park Drive starting at daylight tomorrow and Thursday. Work will continue all day and into the evening, said Spotsylvania spokeswoman Kathy Smith.

Northbound and southbound traffic on Tidewater Trail will alternate using one open lane, directed by work crews with flags.

Spillover congestion from the crossing could make travel at the Dixon Street, Lansdowne Road and Tidewater Trail intersection difficult. If possible, residents should use an alternate route because significant delays are expected, Smith said.

The work was originally scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow through Friday, but the contractor decided to work longer over two days to finish sooner, Smith said.

If i'm not mistaken Ms. Hannon accurately described the I95 location where the bridge construction will take place. It's the bridge we just paid for with bond money at 3.3% interest that will cross from Cosner's Corner to Cosner's hospital and make it's way to Rt 17 where it will take its place in line with the County's next Capital Improvement Program and agenda leading from Cosner's hospital and Rt 17 will, sometime in the very near future, lead us to Spotsylvania's Counbty'sTrain station, to Rt 2.
