Job seminar today at Germanna

Germanna Community College is holding a free seminar today at its Spotsylvania County campus for people looking for a job.

The "Employment Resource Fair" will be held between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The seminar is intended to help people sharpen job skills, prepare for interviews and refine resumes. Walk-ins are welcome without reservation.

The seminar is timely. The unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in the Fredericksburg area in September. Though that's lower than the statewide rate and well-below the figures from other parts of the country, it's higher than the region is used to.

The 5.8 percent rate also doesn't account for those who have stopped looking for work or who are "underemployed," working fewer hours than they'd like.

Among the specific topics at today's event are employment trends, job applications, interviewing, networking and cold calling, managing finances and Internet job searches.

The presenters will include representatives from Germanna's Center for Workforce & Community Education, the Virginia Employment Commission, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance and the Bay Consortium Workforce Investment Board, among others.

Germanna's Culpeper campus will host a job fair Monday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7th District, announced yesterday. The fair will include more than 40 employers.
