Michael Ocetnik

Michael Ocetnik, 89, of Ruther Glen died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at his home.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Dunmore, Pa., he was a World War II veteran. He served with the "Big Red One" 1st Division and 16th Infantry in Algiers-French Morocco, Tunisia Campaign, Eastern Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Sicily. He earned the American Defense Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, two Oak Leaf Clusters, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.

He retired from the Army after 20 years, joined The Washington Post in 1961 and retired after 25 eventful years in 1986.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Lotte; his son, Harald and his wife, Christine; his grandson, Michael and his wife, Joy, and great-grandchildren Hanna, Skyler, Morgan and Colton; his granddaughter Sonja and her husband, Eric, and great-grandchildren Ashley, Cari, Cody, Alexandra, Christen, Nathan, Joseph, Abigail and Jonathan, and great-great-grandchild, Helen Christine; two brothers, Victor and Joseph Ocetnik; nieces, Olympia and family, Maryclaire and family; and nephew, Joe Mike Fromm.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Manassas. Burial in Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
