Man killed in Fairfax had similar but non-lethal incident the previous night in Fredericksburg Date published: 11/17/2009
BY KEITH EPPS About 14 hours before he was shot to death following a traffic pursuit in Fairfax County, David Alan Masters was charged with eluding police in Fredericksburg. Masters, 52, of Fredericksburg was gunned down Friday afternoon in Fairfax in an incident that began when officers were dispatched to the 8800 block of Richmond Highway in response to a report of a larceny in progress. Fairfax police said Masters ignored their orders to stop when he was spotted not far from the scene of the reported larceny. He didn't stop until running into heavy afternoon traffic, police said. He was subsequently shot in the upper torso and killed. Fairfax police last night still had not said what Masters did to draw fire from an officer. Tawny Wright, a public information officer in Fairfax, said yesterday only that the case is still under investigation and no new information was available. She said it isn't clear how long the investigation will take. Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said a city officer had a far less eventful encounter with Masters late Thursday. Bledsoe said an officer tried to stop Masters' vehicle after it went through a red light in Central Park at 11:03 p.m. Bledsoe said Masters was driving only about 20 mph but refused to stop. He drove out of Central Park and into Spotsylvania County, where the vehicle was stopped on 24th Street at 11:09 p.m. Masters, who lived in a trailer park between U.S. 1 and William Street, was charged with misdemeanor eluding and got a summons for failing to obey a traffic signal. Masters has had other run-ins with area law enforcement, including three driving while intoxicated convictions, but none involved violence.
