Striping will close two Stafford VDOT lots

Commuters will not be allowed to park over the weekend at two Virginia Department of Transportation parking lots near State Route 610 in North Stafford.

Parking spaces in the lots are being re-striped.

No parking is allowed in the Mine Road commuter lot from 9 p.m. Friday to 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

No parking is allowed in the Staffordborough Boulevard lot from 6:30 p.m. Saturday to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Overcrowding in the parking lots has led commuters to use every available piece of asphalt. Vehicle owners who park dangerously have been ticketed by the Virginia State Police, who are charged with keeping travel lanes clear in the lots for emergency vehicles and buses.

VDOT is brightening the parking space outlines to clarify what is a legal space, said Tina Bundy, VDOT spokeswoman.

VDOT says the number of parking spaces in the lots will be the same before and after the re-painting.

If drivers notice fewer spaces, "They may have been parking in spaces that weren't designated parking spaces, so this will clearly identify where the designated spaces are," Bundy said.

Stafford continues to hunt for additional commuter parking near I-95 and Route 610. Local shopping centers have turned down requests to lease spaces.

A proposed public-private project to build High Occupancy Toll lanes on I-95 would've paid for 1,050 new commuter parking spaces in North Stafford, but the project is on hold due to a lawsuit filed by Arlington County and concerns over traffic impacts north of Springfield.
