Janet C. Johnson

Janet C. Johnson, 48, affectionately known as "Smokey," entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at her home in Bowling Green.

Janet was born May 9, 1961, to Alice Kenny and the late Jesse Pierce. She joined Zion Grove Baptist Church at an early age, under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. S.H. Carter. She served with the Youth Choir, the Youth Ushers and BTU. She later became a Sunday school teacher, president of the Board of Christian Education, secretary for the Trustee Ministry, superintendent of the Sunday school and the first female deacon of Zion Grove.

She sang with the Voices of Zion Choir and also founded and sang with Grace X Three Gospel Singers.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Prentiss Twiggs of Bowling Green; two grandchildren, Namir and Naiaja Smith, and an adopted daughter, Myeisha Smith, all of Richmond; one adopted son, Mitchell Twiggs of Dawn; her goddaughter, India Anderson; her mother, Alice Kenny of Woodford; one brother, John Kenny and his wife, Sheila, of Woodford; a devoted aunt and godmother, Gloria Reynolds and her husband, Aubrey, of Woodford; six aunts; five uncles; a devoted cousin and best friend, Greer Johnson of King George County; three nieces; two nephews; Baron Johnson of Accokeek, Md.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her father, Deacon Jesse Pierce, stepfather John Kenny and brother Bradley Kenny.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at C.W. Edwards Funeral Home Inc., 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green, Va. 22427.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Zion Grove Baptist Church, 9450 Richmond Turnpike, Woodford, Va. 22580. The Rev. Kenneth J. Grasty, pastor, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
