Katrina's 'Ground Zero' still needs good works

I just returned from a mission trip to Lakeshore, Miss., that was organized by Fairview Baptist Church here in Fredericksburg.

Lakeshore is a coastal town devastated by Hurricane Katrina. We hardly heard about it in the media four years ago because of all the attention New Orleans received.

Most of the homes in the Lakeshore area were totally wiped off their foundations, thus the area has been called "Ground Zero."

This area is still in dire need. Many people are still living in campers and other forms of temporary housing.

Anyone who'd like to help them can visit their Web site (rebuildlakeshore.com). People in a position to get some friends together, especially those with carpentry experience, could help make a difference for the people of the Lakeshore community.

I hope that if I am ever in need, people will be willing to help me out. It was my pleasure to help the people of Lakeshore.

So why didn't they get the insurance ... (posted by MF , Nov. 28, 2009 6:44 pm)    0 likes
Money and rebuild their house ???? Because THEY CHOOSE TO LIVE IN an area prone to devestation. I'm sure it is nice, SO PAY FOR THE INSURANCE or take a big risk...Looks like most rolled the dice and LOST BIG TIME...Is that my fault ??? Should it cost my dollars to rebuild their house ??? SOME CHEAP ASS BASTARD who wanted to live on the coast, but did not want to pay for insurance. I may sound cold, but I am friggin tired of paying for everyone else who has made a screwed up decision..be responsible..

When you live in a house anywhere on the Gulf Coast (posted by ColBatGuano , Nov. 27, 2009 9:11 am)    0 likes
you are always at risk of losing your home . That hurricane was not a freak storm. It can happen again and again. If people want to live in a dangerous area let them put their own money at risk and no-one else's. They need to buy windstorm and flood insurance. They didn't have it before and very likely will not pay to have it if they do rebuild with the largesse of others. A great man once said something like "don't build your house on sand"

You have no idea what you are talking about. I grew up in Gulfport, MS, not too far from Lakeshore. Unlike New Orleans coastal MS is hardly in the flood plain. Katrina was a freak storm & more powerful than Camille. Other hurricanes have struck costal MS with nowhere near the damage Katrina did.

there is no such thing as permanent housing. Why waste the money to rebuild?
