Janus turns out to be an unexpected strain of chords
Date published: 11/27/2009

BY WILL KEEL

Energetic, intense and electric, Janus provides an interesting perspective not often explored in metal on the new "Red Right Return."

Resembling Mushroomhead and Chevelle, Janus incorporates clear vocals and harsh, blasting ones.

The band's hit single, "Eyesore," has soft lyrics ("Return all of this to sender/ That mirror spoke to me/ And showed all of this pretending/ Is catching up to me") juxtaposed against the screaming "Lights out! Wake up! Decide! Reach up! Or be an eyesore!"

This frantic call for action against an unnamed foe provides a generic but pointed option to let out anger or resentment. In this way, Janus gives opportunities for listeners to take the inspirational messages of its music and use them to their own devices.

Janus brings intense but eloquent sounds to its music. The band has found the rare balance between singing and screaming, where its music really sounds good. Few artists do this well--and many who try make their music sound choppy and disconnected. Janus provides smooth, witty transitions to and from hardcore sections.

Having garnered a large grass-roots fan base, Janus has vaulted itself onto high-name channels such as Octane on Sirius-XM.

The band's universal style is fairly friendly to most genres, as it incorporates many interesting rhythms and entrancing melodies.

Overall, Janus has the ability to go far and make many more chart-toppers. The best word to describe Janus would be eloquent, because not many bands incorporate different styles this well.
