Teenagers express their excitement about Black Friday
Date published: 11/27/2009

BY STEPHANIE BOSCOVITCH

When thinking of Black Friday, most people immediately conjure up a picture of a frenzied mom running with a cart through the local JCPenney's, or a "hip" dad staring at electronics all day. However, most seem to forget about the craziest of shoppers, the teenagers.

On a usual day during break, the tired young adults often find it hard to get out of bed; it would seem even if a whole circus was outside their window, sleeping would always come first.

But on Black Friday, it's a different story.

Black Friday comes at a perfect time of year for students.

On a short break, that is really only enjoyed the day of Thanksgiving, when teens get to stuff their faces with food, Black Friday is another event that teens love to take part in. It is perfect for picking out a few new winter items for the frigid season that usually follows.

Black Friday also gives teenagers another activity that they love: an adventure.

Waking up at what seems like the crack of dawn, standing in long lines and pushing through large crowds--put all of these together and it becomes a movie clip from "300," only with accessories, video games and great prices.

Teenagers, like Riverbend High School senior Jake Laribee, love shopping around for the great deals. Most commonly Laribee is browsing Best Buy for the "cheap electronic stuff," said Laribee.

Of course, a holiday wouldn't be as fun to a teenager unless friends were involved. Riverbend senior Melinda Parker thinks the best part about Black Friday is "all the sales and shopping with friends."

The Spotsylvania Towne Centre, especially, has been undergoing renovation and has added new elaborate stores to its complex during the past few years, which if anything else, has encouraged teens to spend their money more than ever.

The only disadvantage teenagers seem to deal with on Black Friday is that many get scheduled to work.

"I'll probably be working," said Riverbend senior, Brooke Messick.

But as much as teenagers love spending money, they usually have to earn it first.

Whether shopping early in the day or after a long day at work, Black Friday can be a lot of fun for all ages.

Stephanie Boscovitch is a senior at Riverbend High School.
