JM oversight a sad but understandable error

Date published: 11/27/2009

I would like to offer my personal observation regarding the ineligible player on James Monroe's talented and well-coached football team who caused them to forfeit a number of their games.

Having lived here for well over 20 years and as a football enthusiast, Friday nights found me and my wife most often at Chancellor High School games, but we are by no means strangers to any of the local high school fields.

To say football is one of our major interests would be an understatement. But even more vital to us are the young people who watch and play. We view sports as yet another means to train and educate our youngsters to become responsible, disciplined adults.

I have witnessed a myriad of mistakes and rules infractions over the years, but errors do occur. I join the community in expressing devastation in learning about Coach Serbay's oversight. I cannot imagine the terrible anguish he is experiencing.

We all know he could have opted to ignore this infraction and hope it would not be discovered, but he didn't, knowing full well he had to face his team with this heartbreaking news.

Oh, to have come so far. Coach Serbay and his team made a firm resolve to finish the proverbial race, to give their very best one more time, yet knowing it would not result in a District Championship.

And finish they did, winning a hard-fought game with an equally outstanding Courtland team. I was deeply moved by the outpouring of support by his team and fans alike after that game.

Adversity, as most will likely agree, is almost always a key element in the development of one's character; it is often a hard pill to swallow.

I hope his resolve to shoulder the responsibility will serve as a resonating example to all. To accept Coach Serbay's resignation, then, would be a disservice to him, his young charges, and the Fredericksburg community as well.

Finally, I fully support the final decision of the Virginia High School League, for this, too, in spite of what the board might have wanted to do, is an act of responsibility.
