Area commuters who power lunch in Washington can now find a different type of midday break.
The Rev. Suzan Johnson Cook, known as Dr. Sujay, has started 30-minute spiritual lunches on Tuesdays in D.C..
The pastor has held weekday prayer lunches on Wall Street for 20 years.
"I felt a strong call and urgency to go to the nation's capital," she said. "I've been doing the financial capital all these years."
This summer, she held Washington prayer lunches when the stimulus bill was going through Congress and the Senate.
"I saw a spiritual lack of stimulus happening in our nation," Cook said.
The half-hour, nondenominational praise sessions proved popular. After they ended, Cook received e-mails and phone calls begging her to come back to Washington.
She decided to return for the holiday season. She started Oct. 27, and the lunches attract nearly 100 attendees, "people who need calm in the midst of the storms of life."
The casual lunches encourage people to just drop in from 12:15-12:45 p.m.
"This is a power lunch in a different respect," Cook said. "This is for people who need a break from the lobbyists; [for people] who need to tap into a different power."
And the pastor promises to have all participants out at 12:45 on the dot.
"They'll be released back to the jobs that God gave them," she said.
