Local vets receive Congressional Veteran Commendation Date published: 11/29/2009
A World War II veteran from Orange County and a Korean War veteran from Culpeper received special honors last week for their service to the nation. Former Army Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Argenzio of Orange and retired Marine Sgt. Lacy Sanford of Culpeper were among nine Virginia veterans given the 2009 Congressional Veteran Commendation by Rep. Eric Cantor (R-7th District) at a ceremony at the State Capitol Tuesday. Argenzio doctored his records to join the Army at 16 and was part of the the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division's landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. He served in campaigns to defeat the Nazi army in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czechoslovakia and Germany. Sanford served with the 1st Marine Division, 7th Marines from 1950-53, seeing combat in Korea in 1952. "We salute the courage and love of country exemplified by those who wear our nation's uniform," Cantor said in a news release. "Through the resolve and gallantry of our nation's veterans, our great country carries on the noble cause they have long championed--liberty." Other recipients include Army Lt. Col. James Anderson of Chesterfield, who is serving in Iraq; Marine Sgt. Maj. Rosser Carter Jr. of Madison, Vietnam and Desert Storm; Army Pvt. Frank Hargrove Sr. of Hanover, World War II; Marine Gunnery Sgt. E. Bruce Heilman of Richmond, World War II; Army Pfc. John Hubbard of Hanover, World War II; Army Col. Donald Kaiserman of Henrico, 1955-75, and Army Sgt. Roger Sullivan of Henrico, Vietnam.
